STAINING FLOORS, YOU CAN EITHER DO IT.... OR YOU CAN'T.... WE CAN
First up we do several samples of the approximate colour, in a few
different spots on the floor so that you can make a decision on the
colour, colour depth and finish type.
The floors are then sanded to a "Super fine" finish which is essential
to ensuring a successful job.
Once sanded, we then proceed to tape the floor up into manageable
strips, so that we can easily apply the stain without stressing over
any over-lap marks appearing. It might appear to take a little longer,
but when it comes down to the hard bit of actually staining I'm always
so glad we went to the extra trouble. It really is worth it.
Now we are committed. The idea here is to do all the hard, fiddly bits
first. Such as along walls, around doors, around toilets, in cupboards,
that sort of thing. Doing these harder spots first makes the job get
easier as we go, and it allows us do these fiddly spots excellently, as
we're not concerned about stepping in work that we have just done.
There, that's the first lot done. It's around about now that some of our
customers start to freak out. Fair enough too!
With the first run dry we are now able to tape up what we have stained
and then fill in the blanks.
This second run usually goes much faster after having done the more
difficult stuff in the beginning.
There. Done. Now ready to start applying the finishing coats.
As you can see the colour looks quite lifeless and dull prior to the
finish coats going down.
Once the stain gets coated it really begins to come to life. All of those
sections all tie in beautifully.
Throughout the coating process there is a lot of fine cutting back and
plenty of vacuuming . Lots of vacuuming.
This is when it all starts to come together.
As that final coat goes down the whole thing comes to life. The colour
really starts to show through. The grain in the timber simply begins to
pop.
These floors are a bit like Ayers Rock, as it depends on how strong and
from what angle the light is coming in on it, as to how the colour hue
alters throughout the day.
This floor has been finished with three coats of 2 pac polyurethane.
The 2 pac provides both maximum protection and shows off the
depth of colour superbly.
These last few photo's were taken at night.
